lawyer, politician, b. New York City. He attended Middlebury College, Vt., studied law, and was admitted to the New York bar in 1830. Late in 1838 he moved to Wisconsin, settling at Lake Geneva, and shortly after his arrival was appointed district attorney for Walworth County. A Democrat, he served in the territorial council (1844-1846), and was a member of the constitutional convention of 1846. In 1848 he was appointed by the governor as one of three commissioners to revise the Wisconsin statutes, and in 1849 was chosen by the legislature to superintend publication of the volume. This he accomplished the same year in Albany, N.Y. In 1856 he served briefly by appointment as circuit judge, filling the unexpired term of fames R. Doolittle (q.v.). E. L. Baker, ed., C. M.
