Bouck, Gabriel 1828 - 1904 | Wisconsin Historical Society

lawyer, soldier, politician, Congressman, b. Fultonham, Schoharie County, N.Y. He graduated from Union College, Schnectady, N.Y. (1847). In 1848 he moved to Milwaukee and in 1849 to Oshkosh where he was admitted to the bar and set up a law practice. A Democrat, he was state attorney general (1858-1860) and state assemblyman (1860, 1874). During the Civil War he served as captain in the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry (1861-1862) and as colonel of the 18th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry (1862-1864). An unsuccessful candidate for Congress in 1874, he was elected to that office in 1876 and served two terms (Mar. 1877-Mar. 1881). Defeated for re-election in 1880, he resumed his law practice in Oshkosh. He was a delegate to the Democratic national conventions of 1868 and 1872. He had interests in several Oshkosh businesses and was a director of two unsuccessful railroad companies in Oshkosh. Biog. Dir. Amer. Gong. (1928); P. M. Reed, Bench and Bar of Wis.
