Aaron Martin Brayton was a lawyer and newspaperman born in La Crescent, Minnesota. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1896, was admitted to the bar, and practiced law for a few years in Minnesota and in the West.

About 1900 he moved to La Crosse where he worked in the editorial departments of the Daily Press and later of the Morning Chronicle. In 1904 he became editor of the La Crosse Tribune. In 1907 this paper became a member of the Lee newspaper syndicate, with Brayton continuing as editor until 1919, and was listed on the masthead as publisher until 1922. After 1917 the paper was styled La Crosse Tribune and Leader-Press. In 1919 Brayton moved to Madison where he was editor and publisher of the Wisconsin State Journal from 1919 until 1942.
