university president, b. Watertown. He graduated from Marquette Univ. (A.B., 1921) and St. Louis Univ. (M.A., 1924). In 1921 he joined the Society of Jesus at Florissant, Mo., and was ordained a priest in the Roman Catholic Church in 1931. He was president of Campion Preparatory School, Prairie du Chien (1934-1937), and provincial, Missouri province, Society of Jesus (1937-1943). From 1944 to 1948 he was president of Marquette Univ. As a student at Marquette he was the principal organizer of the student union (1920), and as president of the university he created the Marquette Fund for building expansion, inaugurated the retirement plan for faculty and employees, and took an active interest in local religious, educational, and civic organizations.
