born Madison Feb. 24, 1889. Educated in Madison public schools. Received B.A. in 1911 from University of Wisconsin; in 1914 LL.B. from Harvard Law School. Practicing attorney in Milwaukee 1914-16, in Madison 1919-49. Veteran of World War I; served in Navy 1917-19. Served as Dane County court commissioner 1926-49. During World War II, government appeal agent and member of a selective service system appeal board. Executive counsel, in 1945, to Governor Goodland, in 1947-49 to Governors Goodland and Rennebohm. Commissioner of Public Service Commission Apr.-July 1949. Appointed to Supreme Court July 14, 1949, to succeed Justice John D. Wickhem, deceased. Elected to Supreme Court Apr. 1953 to a full 10-year term. (Blue Book 1962)
