(generally referred to as Frontenac) French Army officer and Governor General of Canada. During his first term as Governor (1672-1682) he actively promoted the expansion of fur trade in the Great Lakes region and gave his assistance to explorer La Salle (q.v.). The outbreak of King William's War prompted his return for a second term as Governor from 1689. He sent out numerous detachments of French and Indians to raid New England and through the use of guerrilla warfare, he managed to save Canada from Anglo-American invasion.
