He studied law in a law office and at the Univ. of Wisconsin, was admitted to the bar (1888), and set up a practice in Beaver Dam. A Democrat, he was state assemblyman (1891-1894) and state senator (1895-1898). He was city attorney of Beaver Dam (1893-1908) and mayor (1908-1910).
