Chapman, Chandler Pease (1844 - 1897)
Organizer of Wisconsin National Guard
Chandler Pease Chapman, the organizer of Wisconsin National Guard, was born Bristol, Ohio in 1844. He moved with his father, Chandler Burnell Chapman, and family to Madison in 1846, and attended Carroll College.
Career
He served with the 6th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry from 1861 to 1862. Following the war, he engaged in newspaper work, and later purchased the Dane County abstract office, a business in which he remained for the rest of his life. Known as the "Father of the National Guard" in Wisconsin, he organized the group into an efficient unit and was its adjutant general from 1882 until 1889.
