Only Co. G of the 1st U.S. Sharpshooters regiment was from Wisconsin. It was organized at Camp Randall in Madison and joined its regiment in Weehawken, N. J., en route to Washington, D.C. It was assigned to special service on the outposts or picket lines at many of the war's major engagements. Co. G fought in the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Hanover Court House, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Malvern Hill, Cold Harbor, Second Bull Run, Petersburg, and Fredericksburg before being mustered out on September 22, 1864.
