Civil War: 4th Light Artillery
The 4th Wisconsin Light Artillery was organized at Racine and mustered into service on October 1, 1861. It was ordered to Baltimore, Maryland, on January 21, 1862. From Baltimore it moved through Maryland to Virginia. It participated in the siege of Suffolk and siege operations against Petersburg and Richmond, the battles of Fair Oaks and Drury's Bluff, and it fired the gun "Union" during the Monitor and Merrimac engagement. The battery was mustered out on July 8, 1865. It lost 25 men during active service. Three enlisted men were killed and 22 enlisted men died from disease.
