The 50th Wisconsin Infantry was recruited and organized at the very end of the war under the supervision of Colonel John G. Clark, of Grant County. It left Madison by companies in the latter part of March and beginning of April 1865, and on arriving at St. Louis was assigned to quarters at Benton Barracks. The regiment moved first to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and was then ordered to Fort Rice, Dakota Territory, where they arrived on October 10, 1865. It returned to Madison and was disbanded the following June.
