Clark, William, 1770-1838.
after sharing command of the Lewis and Clark expedition to the Pacific, 1804-1806, he was named U.S. Superintendant of Indian Affairs for the region that included Wisconsin the following year; in 1814 built Fort Shelby at Prairie du Chien; although residing in St. Louis, he participated in all major treaties negotiated with Wisconsin Indians and was intimately involved in military and diplomatic affairs of the state until his death in 1838.
