Congressman, banker, b. West Salem. He attended public schools and engaged in farming. A Democrat, he was noted for his strong anti-tariff views. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1891-1893), and held numerous local offices, including those of member of the La Crosse county board (1894-1903), jury commissioner (1897-1932), and member of the county board of review of income taxes (1912-1926).
