teacher, educator, b. Wallkill, N.Y. He was self educated. In 1843 he moved to Wisconsin, settling on a farm near Palmyra, where he farmed and taught school. In 1856 he was appointed editor of the Wisconsin Journal of Education, then a state publication. A Republican, he was state assemblyman (1859). In 1860 he was elected president of the State Teachers' Association and served as assistant superintendent of public instruction (1860-1867). During the Civil War he served as a 100-day volunteer with the 40th Wisconsin Regiment (1864). In 1867 he was elected state superintendent of public instruction, serving from Jan., 1868, until his death. Madison Wis. State Journal, July 5, 1870; Wis.
