lawyer, judge, b. Ballibay, Ireland. He migrated to the U.S. (1840), settling in Orange County, N.Y. In 1841 he moved to Galena, Ill., studied law, and was admitted to the bar (1844). During the same year he moved to Mineral Point where he practiced law until 1853. He was associate justice of the state supreme court (1853-1855), but was defeated for re-election due to his support of the fugitive slave act in the Sherman Booth (q.v.) case. J. B.
