born at Princeton, Wis. Jan. 16, 1900. Educated in Montello public schools. Attended Oshkosh State Teachers' College 2 years; taught school 3 years. Received legal education at University of Wisconsin Law School, LL.B. in 1925; awarded Order of the Coif; in senior year student editor-in-chief of Wisconsin Law Review. For 26 years practiced law at Sheboygan. During World War I, served several months in Student Army Training Corps. Member Sheboygan public library board for over 20 years; served as president during the last 16 years. Appointed to Supreme Court on Aug. 30, 1951, to fill vacancy resulting from the resignation of Justice Henry P. Hughes. Elected to Supreme Court without opposition to a full 10-year term, Apr. 1957. Became Chief Justice Jan. 6, 1964, upon the retirement of Chief Justice Timothy Brown at the end of his term. (Blue Book 1966)
