Born Oshkosh, June 11, 1919; married; 1 daughter. Graduate Eau Claire Senior H.S.; B.A. UW-Madison 1942; J.D. 1947. Former practicing attorney. WW II vet.; served in Army 1942-46. Member: American and Wis. Bar Associations; Ygdrasil Literary Society (past pres.); Madison Torske Klubben; Madison Literary Club; Masonic Order; Madison Club. Former member: Madison Housing Authority 1960-64. First Dane Co. assistant district attorney 1949-52;. special counsel to governor in 1963 reapportionment case; UW System Board of Regents 1972-74; Wis. Bicentennial Comn. on the Constitution (chp.). Appointed to Supreme Court August 1974 to fill vacancy created by retirement of Chief Justice E. Harold Hallows; elected to full term 1976; reelected 1986. Became chief justice August 1, 1995, upon the retirement of Chief Justice Nathan S. Heffernan. (Blue Book 1995-96)
