museum director, b. Hulberton, N.Y. He graduated from the Univ. of Rochester (B.S., 1913) and George Washington Univ. (Ph.D., 1930). Following his graduation from Rochester, he served as laboratory assistant at Rochester, and later as paleontologist for the N.Y. State Museum. In 1916 he moved to Milwaukee where he became an assistant in the geology department of the Milwaukee Public Museum. He became assistant curator in 1919, curator of the department of geology (1922), and director of the museum in 1940. He was noted for his research expeditions to American desert areas.
