Historical Essay
Eleva
Origin of Eleva, Wisconsin
Named by R.P. Goddard of Mondovi. Believed the name was taken from a French village; A grain elevator had been erected by the railroad tracks. Only the first five letters had been painted when the scaffolds were left for the winter season. Newcomers assumed that the uncompleted name on the elevator was the town's name. The name caught on, and before long was substituted for the original name of New Chicago.
