born Milwaukee, Dec. 25, 1912. Educated Milwaukee public schools; received A.B. in 1934 from Cornell University; in 1938, LL.B. from University of Wisconsin Law School. Practicing attorney in Portage 1938-42; attorney U.S. office of Price Administration 1942-45; practicing attorney in Milwaukee 1945-48 and 1953-57. Past member, executive committee Milwaukee Bar Assn,, and. board of directors Wisconsin Welfare Council. Elected state Attorney General in 1948. Served as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, 1951-52. Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate 1950 and 1952. Chairman of the 1963, cochairman of the 1960 Governor's Commissions on Constitutional Revision. Elected to Supreme Court April 3 1956, to succeed Chief Justice Edward T. Fairchild, who retired January 7, 1957, at the end of his term. (Blue Book 1966)
