nurse, educator; b. Magnolia, Arkansas, May 20, 1927. Felder was the first in her family to attend college, earning her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Hampton University in Virginia. After earning a master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a PhD from Marquette University, Dr. Felder taught at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee College of Nursing for 23 years. In 1986, she founded the Center for Cultural Diversity and Health (CCDH), which continues to flourish as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Center for Cultural Diversity and Global Health. Dr. Felder also served as the first director of the center, which is believed to be the first in the country to "facilitate service, research, scholarship, education, and public policy to promote culturally informed, appropriate, competent, and ethical health and well-being in a global context.” Dr. Felder was also a founding member of the Milwaukee chapter for the National Black Nurses Association, a charter member of the Association of Black Nursing Faculty, Inc., and co-editor of the ABNF Journal. She was honored in 2003 for her contributions to University Wisconsin Milwaukee with the UWM Speight’s Plaza Award. Dr. Felder died on November 17, 2008.
