lawyer, politician, b. Mesopotamia, Ohio. He moved to Wisconsin in 1846 where he taught school, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and set up a practice in West Bend. He was active in the Free Soil party and, after 1854, in the Republican party. During the 1850's he held minor political offices in Washington County, and was state assemblyman (1861). He was twice a delegate to Republican national conventions (1860, 1872), and twice an unsuccessful candidate for Congress (1868, 1878).
