surgeon, professor, b. Milwaukee. He graduated from the Univ. of Wisconsin (B.S., 1899) and Johns Hopkins Univ. (M.D., 1903). He practiced medicine in Milwaukee (1906-1912), and in 1912 went abroad to study orthopedic surgery, eventually becoming a well-known specialist in this field. He was associated with several hospitals in Milwaukee, and in 1918 was appointed associate professor of orthopedic surgery at Marquette Univ. medical school. Although maintaining his residence in Milwaukee, he served as surgeon for the Univ. of Wisconsin medical school (1920-1925), and was professor of orthopedic surgery for the university (1925-1937). Gaenslen was president of the American Orthopedic Association (1936), chairman of the orthopedic division of the American Medical Association (1936-1937), and president of the Wisconsin State Medical Association (1929-1930). He developed many new procedures in orthopedic surgery, and wrote numerous articles on the subject for professional journals. Who's Who in Amer., 18 (1934); W. G.
