paper manufacturer, businessman, b. Greenwood, Ill. He moved to Wisconsin with his parents in 1854, settling in Centralia (Wisconsin Rapids). After attending Ripon College preparatory school (1873-1874), he opened a general merchandise store in Centralia. He operated this business until 1887, and also served as Centralia postmaster (1876-1881). In 1886 he was one of the organizers of the Centralia Pulp and Water Power Co., which built the first pulp mill on the Wisconsin River. Shortly after its incorporation, he became president of this company and served in this capacity until his death. He helped organize the John Edwards Paper Mill (1896), the Nekoosa Paper Company (1893), and the Wood County Bank (1891), of which he was president until his death. Grand Rapids Wis.
