German-English Academy | Wisconsin Historical Society
In 1853 this Academy was established in Milwaukee under the auspices of the Milwaukee Schulverein. Support came from the liberal German-Americans who in 1888 built for it large buildings. In 1878 a normal school opened in connection with the academy. This was the model for the National German-American Teachers' Seminary. Students received the same training as that given in seminaries in Germany including teaching in English and German. The instruction in the seminary was free.
