According to oral information provided to local eighth grade students in 1923, "Gilman... was named after a son of Mr. Moon of Stanley, who had an interest in the S[tanley]., M[errill]. & P[hillips] Railroad." Delos Moon's wife was originally named Sallie Gilman, and Gilman Moon was one of their sons.
