newspaperman, politician, b. Toronto, Canada. He moved with his parents to Racine in 1853. In 1859 he settled in Oconto where he founded the Oconto Pioneer, and was editor and publisher of this paper (1859-1865). In 1864 he was commissioned major of the 39th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry (100 day volunteers), and in Jan., 1865, was made colonel of the 47th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He was mustered out of the service in Sept., 1865, with the brevet rank of brigadier general. After leaving the army he moved to Green Bay, where in 1866 he founded the Green Bay Gazette in partnership with D. I. Follett, and in 1868 moved to Chippewa Falls. In 1870 he founded the Chippewa Falls Chippewa Herald, and was editor and publisher (1870-1890). A Republican, he was state assemblyman (1863) and state senator (1885-1888). He was president of the Wisconsin Editorial Association (1875-1878), and at the time of his death was U.S. marshal for the western district of Wisconsin. Proc. State Hist. Soc.
