Haas, Carl De 1816 - 1875 | Wisconsin Historical Society
pioneer settler, author, newspaperman, b. Elberfeld (now Wuppertal), Germany. He graduated from the Univ. of Berlin, migrated to the U.S. in 1847 and purchased a farm near Calumetville, Fond du Lac County. About 1850 he moved to Buffalo, N.Y., and for several years taught school and edited newspapers in various cities in that region. Returning to Wisconsin in 1871, he established the Fond du Lac Nordwestlicher Courier, a German-language weekly and semiweekly newspaper. He was editor and publisher of this paper (1871-1875). Shortly after his arrival in Wisconsin he wrote a German-language pamphlet giving information and helpful hints for prospective emigrants. The pamphlet went through several editions, and is credited with greatly encouraging German emigration to Wisconsin. C. de Haas, N. Amer., Wis.: Hints for Emigrants (2nd ed., [Fond du Lac?, 1943]); Hist. of Fond du Lac Co. (Chicago, 1880); Fond du Lac Commonwealth, Apr. 24, 1875.
