professor of English and phonetics, author, b. Xenia, Ohio. He graduated from Wittenberg College, Ohio (B.A., 1914), Ohio State Univ. (M.A., 1916), and Harvard Univ. (M.A., 1926). He served as 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. army (1918-1919), and taught at various colleges and universities before coming to the Univ. of Wisconsin in 1927. He was assistant professor of English at Wisconsin (1927-1931), associate professor (1931-1932), and full professor from 1939 until his death. An expert in phonetics, Hanley was away from the university for three years as associate director of the Linguistic Atlas of New England (1932- 1934), and while in the East lectured at Yale and Harvard. He represented the Univ. of Wisconsin at the 2nd International Congress of Phonetic Sciences in 1935, and was a consultant in the preparation of several dictionaries. He was secretary and treasurer of the American Dialect Society (1928-1940), and was co-author of Materials and Methods of Reproducing Research Materials (with R. Binkley, 1936), and A Word Index to James Joyce's UIysses (with Martin Joos, 1937). His largest undertaking was an index of English rhymes, made with WPA aid, which attempted a complete compilation of all rhymes in English poetry from the year 1500 onward.
