Hayes, William Arthur 1866 - 1942 | Wisconsin Historical Society
teacher, lawyer, b. Eden, Wis. He graduated from Oshkosh Normal School (1892), and from 1892 to 1895 taught at Algoma and was principal of the high school. He graduated from the Univ. of Wisconsin Iaw school (LL.B., 1897), moved to Milwaukee in 1898, and from 1906 to 1908 was the first assistant district attorney. In 1908 he was appointed general counsel for the Wisconsin Central R.R. and continued as counsel for its successor, "the Soo Line," serving until 1940. He was president of the Wisconsin Bar Association (1924), and originated the movement for the affiliation of state and local bar associations. He retired from active practice in 1940, and lived in Milwaukee until his death. Wis. Reports, 245 (1945), pp. xlv-1; Proc. State Bar Assoc.
