Hempsted, Henry N. 1830 - 1898
musician, composer, b. Albany, N.Y. He attended Albany Academy and studied piano and composition. In 1849 he moved to Milwaukee, and for a time taught music. In 1851 he became a partner in the city's only music store, and for a number of years was a leader in promoting musical societies in Milwaukee. He published music, was editor and publisher of the magazine Musical Echo, and had a wide reputation as a composer of band music, his best known work being "The Light Guard Quickstep" (1859).
