Hixon, Gideon Cooley 1826 - 1892 | Wisconsin Historical Society

pioneer lumberman, politician, b. Roxbury, Vt. He moved to Wisconsin in 1856, settling in La Crosse where he began lumbering operations in the Black River district. In 1883 he became associated with T. B. Scott (q.v.) and A. W. Pettibone in sawmill operations and acquisition of timberlands on the Wisconsin River. He helped organize the T. B. Scott Lumber Co. of Merrill and was connected with this enterprise until his death. He had extensive investments in Chippewa pine lands. A Republican, he served as state assemblyman (1871-1872), state senator (1873-1874), and held several local offices. La Crosse Republican and Leader, Sept. 23, 1892; Columbian Biog. Dict. . . . Wis.
