Named for the large amount of wild honey that used to be found through this portion of the country. Description from John W. Hunt's 1853 Wisconsin Gazetteer: "is about 25 miles in length, together with the rapidity of its current, renders it peculiarly serviceable as a water power. Several mills are already in operation upon the stream, and others are in process of erection."
