geologist, mining engineer, industrialist executive, b. East Brooklyn, N.Y. He graduated from Yale Univ. (A.B., 1867)and from Sheffield (Yale) Scientific School (Ph.D., 1869; Ph.D., 1870). In 1870 he moved to Milwaukee where he was chemist and technical engineer with the Milwaukee Iron Co.(1870-1875), engineer and general superintendent of the Menominee Mining Co. (1876-1881), and general superintendent of the Pewabic Co. (1886-1896). A leader in the development of the Menominee Iron Range, Hulst discovered and developed the six principal mines in Michigan (Vulcan, Cyclops, Norway, Quinnesec, Chapin, and Pewabic), and also developed the Florence mine in Wisconsin. From 1897 to 1901 he was general manager of the Carnegie iron-mining interests in the Lake Superior region. When the Carnegie Steel Co. was purchased by U.S. Steel Corporation in 1901, Hulst became vice-president of U.S. Steel in charge of mining properties in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, and held this position until his retirement in 1904. He also held executive positions in several other mining and industrial enterprises. After retiring he lived in Milwaukee until his death. Who Was Who in Amer. (1943); Wis. Mag. Hist., 7; E. B.
