lawyer, judge, politician, Congressman, b. Candor, N.Y. He attended Cortland (N.Y.) Academy, read law, and was admitted to the New York bar in 1854. In 1855 he moved to Wisconsin, settling in Hudson where he set up a law practice. He was district attorney for St. Croix County, and county judge. A Republican, he was state senator (1862-1863), and from 1866 to 1877 served as circuit judge of Wisconsin's 8th judicial district. In 1876 he was elected to Congress, and served three terms (Mar. 1877-Mar. 1883).
