agricultural leader, b. near Neenah. He was educated in rural schools and began operating his mother's farm at the age of 16. He soon purchased his own farm, where he stressed milk production from his registered Ayrshire cattle. At the age of 19 he became a member of the South Greenville Grange and was master at 26. He held several offices in the state Grange, became master in 1919, and continued in this office through 1939. He was a delegate to the National Grange for many years and held the office of steward for a decade. Instrumental in organizing the Wisconsin Council of Agriculture, he was secretary (1924-1933) and president (1933-1940). He was chairman of the state board of agriculture (1939-1942) and was appointed director of the state department of agriculture by Governor Julius Heil (q.v.) in 1942. He was a regent of the Univ. of Wisconsin (1934-1936), and was cited for honorary recognition by the university's College of Agriculture in 1938. Madison Wis. State journal, Mar. 6, 1943; Natl.
