military scientist and surgeon at Fort Crawford in 1824; in 1819-1820 he had crossed the Great Plains to the Rocky Mountains with the Stephen Long Expedition (see his three-volume account of this trip in American Journeys, at http://www.americanjourneys.org/aj-144a/summary/); he settled in Iowa where he advocated for Indian rights and ran a stop on the Underground Railroad.
