lawyer, editor, politician, judge, b. Ontario, Canada. He migrated to the U.S. in 1844, and in 1848 moved to Wisconsin settling in Prairie du Chien. There he read law, was admitted to the bar (1849), and set up a law practice. From 1854 to 1856 he was editor of the Prairie du Chien Courier. A Republican, he was state assemblyman from Crawford County (1861). In 1862 he moved to Milwaukee where he continued his law practice, and represented Milwaukee in the assembly (1869-1870). After 1872 he supported the Democratic party. He was Milwaukee city attorney (1878-1880), and in 1887 was elected circuit judge of the 2nd circuit, serving in this capacity from 1888 until his death.
