professor of chemistry, author, b. Two Rivers. He graduated from the Univ. of Wisconsin (B.S., 1892; M.S., 1893) and the Univ. of Leipzig (Ph.D., 1895). Returning to the Univ. of Wisconsin, he was appointed professor of chemistry in 1900, and from 1907 to 1919 was chairman of the chemistry department. His most important research was done on the relation of solvents, nonaqueous solutions, and the processes of hydrolysis, electrolysis, and dialysis. He was president of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters (1906-1909) and of the American Electrochemical Society (1930-1931). He was the author of several books on agricultural and qualitative chemistry and wrote over 100 articles. He continued as professor of chemistry at the university until his retirement to emeritus status in 1940, when he moved to Sarasota, Fla. Encyclopedia of Amer. Biog., n.s., 15 (1942); Trans. Wis.
