principal rival of Black Hawk; he supported the Americans during the war of 1812 and was recognized chief of the Sauk and Meskwaki (Fox) by U.S. officials; argued that resistance to white military force was futile, and refused to support Black Hawk's resistance to white incursion in 1832.
