Krautbauer, Francis Xavier 1824 - 1885 | Wisconsin Historical Society
Catholic priest, bishop, b. near Bruck, Germany. He attended the Ratisbon Seminary and the Univ. of Munich, and was ordained in the priesthood in 1850. In the same year he migrated to the U.S., and from 1850 to 1859 did pastoral work in Buffalo, N.Y. In 1859 he was appointed general spiritual director and ecclesiastical superior of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Milwaukee, and served in this capacity until 1875, when he was elected bishop of Green Bay. He was bishop of Green Bay until his death, and was instrumental in building St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in that city. J. B. Code, Dint. of Amer. Hierarchy (New York, 1940); [H. H. Heming], Cath.
