lawyer, judge, politician, industrialist, b. Lenox, N.Y. He settled in Plover in 1852 and later in Mayville. A Democrat, he served one term in the Wisconsin Assembly (1872), was district attorney (1873-1875), and county judge for Dodge County (1877-1893). He served (1893-1897) as U.S. Land Commissioner in Cleveland's second administration, an appointment that aroused a political furor because of his pineland activities with William F. Vilas (q.v.).
