Carte-de-visite portrait of John Lawrence Smith (1818-1883), American chemist. From 1846-1850, he worked for the Turkish government, exploring their country's mineral resources, wherein he discovered deposits of coal, chrome ore, and the famous emery deposits of Naxos. During his lifetime, his collection of meteorites was the greatest in the United States. The bottom of the image bears the handwritten inscriptions, "Taken 1854" and, "J. Lawrence Smith, 1869. Chemist and Minerologist."
