Stephen Nicholas
Quarter-length portrait of Stephen Nicholas (1840-1901) of Chilton, Wisconsin. Stephen was a member of the Narragansett tribe. He served with Co. D, 1st Wisconsin Cavalry during the Civil War. He enlisted as a private, but later became a sergeant. According to an 1886 article in the Neenah Gazette he was known for his "superhuman strength, undaunted courage, and excellent horsman[ship]." In the photo Nicholas wears his GAR badge. |
