Nick Hoffman

Nick Hoffman serves as Administrator of Museums and Historic Sites at the Wisconsin Historical Society, where he oversees operations across the Society’s historic sites and attractions statewide, preserving and sharing stories of Wisconsin and American history. 

Hoffman received a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in history with a specialization in public history and a certificate in museum studies from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is a graduate of the American Association for State and Local History’s History Leadership Institute. Hoffman’s education and career developed a deep understanding of Wisconsin and Midwest history.  

He has extensive experience in community-based public history work and museums, previously serving in leadership positions at the Elkhart County Historical Museum in Bristol, Indiana, History Museum at the Castle in Appleton, Wisconsin, and the Missouri Historical Society in St. Louis, Missouri. Hoffman is a co-host of “The Look Back,” a series on PBS Wisconsin made for learners in grades 4-6 that explores eras from Wisconsin's history through artifacts. 

Hoffman has received numerous awards for his work in programs, exhibits and community engagement. His work in Appleton culminated with the highest honor for museums—the National Medal for Museum and Library Service by the Institute for Museum and Library Service. He authored multiple history articles published in the Wisconsin Magazine of History and is co-author of “Wheel Fever: How Wisconsin Became a Great Bicycling State.” The book received regional and national accolades including national finalist for the National Indie Excellence Award, Finalist for the Jon Gjerde Prize for Best Midwestern History by the Midwest History Association, and runner-up for Council for Wisconsin Writers' Norbert Blei/August Derleth Nonfiction Book Award. His work on Black history in the Fox Cities in collaboration with African Heritage, Inc. earned him the Jane LaChapelle McCarty-MLK Community Leadership Award from Celebrate Diversity: Fox Cities.
