James Dwight Dana, Geologist

Carte-de-visite portrait of James Dwight Dana (1813-1895), American minerologist, geologist, and zoologist. He is best known for his discoveries of mountain formation, volcanoes, and the origin and structure of the continents and oceans. In 1836 and 1837, he served as assistant to Benjamin Silliman in the Chemistry lab at Yale University, and later married Silliman's daughter. Dana is shown sitting here in three-quarter profile, holding a top hat in his hand. Handwritten inscription at bottom reads, "Jas.D.Dana 1865."
