Speed Holmen

Charles "Speed" Holman and Ed Ballough, the Laird Team, after the New York to Los Angeles air race. Minnesotan Charles Holman earned his nickname by racing motorcycles, but in 1919 he discovered aviation. In 1926 Holman became the first pilot for Northwest Airways, and in the following years he flew airmail and passengers to several Wisconsin cities. Holmen also competed in the National Air Races, and he won the first Thompson Trophy in 1930 while flying a Laird Wasp. Holmen died the following year at the Omaha Air Races.
