A head and shoulders portrait of Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd President of the United States, 1889-1893. Harrison was born on August 20, 1833, on a farm near the Ohio River in North Bend, Ohio and died on March 13, 1901, in Indianapolis, Indiana. During the Civil War he served as Colonel of the 70th Volunteer Infantry. He subsequently developed a reputation as a brilliant lawyer in Indianapolis and also campaigned for the Republican party. In the 1880's, he served in the U.S. Senate. He ran for President in the 1888 election and carried the Electoral College, while losing the popular vote to Cleveland. Although he ran for reelection in 1892, he was defeated by Cleveland. Harrison signed the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, the first federal act that attempted to regulate big business and trusts.
