Summary

Marshall Memorial Hall
30 Wisconsin Dells Parkway South, Lake Delton, Sauk County
Architect: Edward Tough
Construction Date: 1928

Marshall Memorial Hall is a small, well designed, Georgian Revival style, brick building constructed to house a public library and the offices of the Town of Delton. The Hall was built with a bequest from Roujet De Lisle Marshall (1847-1922) a longtime associate justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court who had spent his boyhood in the village.

The building was designed by Edward Tough (1878-1970), a Scottish born architect who practiced mostly in Madison, Wisconsin. Tough's decision to give this building a Georgian Revival appearance reflected the great popularity of colonial-inspired buildings sparked by the well-publicized restoration and reconstruction of Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia.

As a result of Marshall's bequest, the Town was able to build a larger and more elaborate building than would otherwise have been possible for such a small community. Located at the back of the building is a sizable meeting room. This space, known as the auditorium, has a raised stage, a large arched opening above the stage called a proscenium arch, and rooms behind the stage.

Marshall Memorial Hall has been in continuous use since its completion and is a good example of how historic building styles were revived and reused to meet early twentieth century needs. The Hall is still used by the Town of Delton and is open to the public during daily business hours.
