The eight building Period Revival style Edgewood Place Historic District is tucked away near a large golf course and not easily accessed. This gives the neighborhood an isolated ambience that has attracted families for many years. In the generally dense pre- and post-World War II neighborhoods of La Crosse, Edgewood Place is a hidden gem of charming homes.

Although a small district, its houses are unified by their short construction period and by their overall style elements, form and massing, and construction materials and methods. They are, as a group, a distinctive example of mid-20th century contractor-builder Period Revival style houses constructed for La Crosse's middle class. Most houses in the district are popular interpretations of the Colonial Revival and the Tudor Period Revival style. Popular periodicals such as Country Life encouraged a taste for Revival styles and provided illustrated designs and blueprints as well. Catalogs of house plans like Alladin Homes and pre-cut house "kits" from Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward catalogs as well as pre-cut components from local lumberyards and wood products manufacturing companies could be ordered by anyone everywhere in America.

But, the most distinctive house in the district is the most architecturally significant Art Moderne house in La Crosse. This house, built in the same period as the others, has a design that took an entirely different approach. Its round edged geometric forms, smooth stucco covered wall surfaces, and flat roof with small coping at the roof line represents the streamlined machine age that influenced the Art Moderne style.

The houses in the district are private residences. Please respect the rights and privacy of the residents.
